Clear Lake

Clear Lake, at milepost 72.4, forms the headwaters of the McKenzie River. This 1.5 mile long lake boasts crystal clear waters with a maximum depth of 195 feet and an average water temperature of 43 degrees.

The lake (which occupies the ancestral bed of the McKenzie River) lies behind a dam formed by lava flows from Little Nash Crater about 3,000 years ago. Large petrified trees with radio-carboned ages of approximately 2,900 years are submerged in the lake and are clearly visible to boaters above.

A lodge on the northwest shore hires out rowboats (non-motorized craft only on the lake) as well as cabins. At the southern end, where the McKenzie begins, the Coldwater Cove Campground offers handicapped access sites.
