Aufderheide National Scenic Byway

The Robert Aufderheide Memorial Drive can be accessed from the McKenzie Highway at milepost 45.9. Look for signs for USFS Rd. #19 and Cougar Reservoir.

Aufderheide Drive parallels the South Fork of the Mckenzie River and later the North Fork of the Middle Fork of the Willamette River, as it travels 70 miles through High Cascade scenery to the communities of Westfir and Oakridge.

Along the way are memorable views of old-growth Douglas fir, meadows, rushing white water streams, and numerous interpretive signs explaining forest management activities. Access can also be gained to the Three Sisters and Waldo Lake Wilderness Areas. An audio cassette tape describing the tour route is available (free) from the Blue River or Oakridge Ranger Stations.
