Harrisburg Beats McKenzie

The Harrisburg Eagles scored 17 runs to McKenzie's 7 in a game much closer than the final score indictated on Monday, April 22, at Harrisburg. Harrisburg scored 3 runs in the 1st inning, 7 runs in the 2nd, 2 in the 4th, 1 in the 5th, and 2 final runs in the 6th.

McKenzie countered with 1 run in the 1st, 3 runs in the second, and 3 runs in the 4th inning to keep the game interesting. Ashley Pearman collected 2 singles for 3 at bats and scored 2 runs. Eli Joy also hit 2 singles in 4 at bats and scored a run. Todd Richardson, hitting in the #3 spot, hit 2 singles, and scored 2 runs. Todd Edwards hit a double and a single and scored 1 run, Eric Bongen singled twice, and Adam Rodakowski and Mark Willhite each singled once. Rodakowski also started the game as the McKenzie pitcher.

Edwards Pitches No-Hitter

McKenzie's Todd Edwards pitched his first career no-hitter at Mapleton, Wednesday, April 24 - yet still was denied the win - as the Eagles lost to the Sailors, 2-1. Edwards sent 11 Mapleton batters back to the dugout pine on strikeouts but a combination of 5 walks, 2 hit batters, and anemic Eagle batting doomed an otherwise sterling pitching performance.

Freshman catcher Eli Joy was the only consistent McKenzie hitter, (2 for 3 at the plate), connecting an RBI single that scored senior Ashley Pearman from 3rd base and later hitting a high outfield double that was lost in the sun by the Sailor right-fielder.

The other 2 McKenzie hits were by sophomore Eric Bongen and junior Mark Willhite, but the Eagles were given a chair 12 times (strikeouts) as Sailor pitcher Ricardo LeClaire recorded the win.

Mapleton's scores were both unearned as LeClaire scored the winning run from 2nd base on a steal to third combined with an Eagle error at third mishandling catcher Eli Joy's pick-off throw. LeClaire beat the back-up throw from left field to home for the win.

Alsea Holds-off Eagle Rally To Win 7-5

McKenzie traveled to the coast range community of Alsea, Thursday, April 25, for a Trico League baseball game. Clear skies and warm temperatures - with just enough wind to hint at a pending weather change - made for a rather pleasant afternoon for a baseball game.

Adam Rodakowski led the Eagle's offense with 2 singles for 3 trips to the plate and also scored a run. Todd Richardson hit a single and collected 2 RBIs, while Ashley Pearman hit a RBI single and scored a run. The Eagles jumped to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning, scoring Pearman off a bases-loaded walk to Rodakowski.

Alsea answered back in the bottom of the inning, scoring an unearned run off a passed ball to the Eagle catcher. They also scored an earned run off a sharp single to left center. Alsea added 2 more runs in the 2nd inning, 1 run in the 4th, and 2 final runs in the 5th - for a total of 7 runs on 7 hits.

McKenzie rallied with a run in the 5th inning and 3 more in the top of the 6th, but cooled off in the top of the 7th to end the comeback bid. The Eagles had 5 hits for the game.

Eagles Outlast Indians 4-3 In 9 Innings

McKenzie broke open a 0-0 deadlock through 3 1/2 innings of baseball by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th, but the Mohawk Indians were not about to go home early as they responded in kind, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning to tie the score.

Neither team could take advantage of stranded runners left on base until the bottom of the 9th inning, when Eagle pitcher Todd Edwards helped his own cause by scoring from 2nd base on a Mark Willhite single to left-center. The complete game win for Edwards marked his 2nd straight sterling performance on the mound as he retired 13 Mohawk batters.

Edwards did, however, give up 6 walks and hit 1 Indian batter with a pitch, including one stretch where he walked 4 in a row with 2 outs in the crucial 6th inning.

Despite struggling through the 6th, Eagle Coach Rick Gardner stayed with his ace, settled him down, and Edwards responded by limiting Mohawk to just 4 hits, (3 singles and a double).

Mohawk's starting pitcher, Derek Davis, also pitched an outstanding game, striking out 10 Eagle batters, walking 2, while giving up 9 hits for the game.

At the plate, McKenzie was led by Edwards as well, as he hit 3 for 4 on the night with 3 singles and 2 runs scored. Todd Richardson hit a single in 4 plate appearances and scored the first run. Eli Joy also hit 1-4 with a run scored, and Adam Rodakowski, Pat Fallon, and Eric Bongen all recorded a single apiece.

Defensively, the Eagle centerfielder Mark Willhite had a huge night, catching 3 long and high fly balls to back up his pitcher. Senior Dan Rich caught two fly balls hit to left including an excellent knee high grab on a full run from a sharp line drive into short left. Shortstop Todd Richardson kept things tight in the infield as well, catching 3 high pop-up hits.

The Trico League win boosts McKen-zie's record to 4-8, with 6 league games remaining.

Oakridge 8, McKenzie 4

On a beautiful sunny Saturday - quite obviously designed for a baseball game - McKenzie hosted Oakridge in a Trico League contest on May 4.

The Eagles outhit the visitors 12-10, but McKenzie's batters left too many potential runs on base to take advantage as they stranded 11 runners. Senior Ashley Pearman led the Eagle offense, hitting 4 for 5 at the plate with a triple and 3 singles. Pearman also scored the 1st Eagle run off a double by teammate Todd Edwards. Edwards also hit a single to go 2-4 for the day with 1 run scored. Eagle senior Dan Rich hit 3 singles to go 3-4, Travis Nelson was 2-4, and Adam Roda-kowsi hit 2-4 to round out the McKenzie batting.

McKenzie never led in the game, falling behind 1-0 in the 1st, trailing 2-1 at the end of 3 innings, and 3-1 at the end of the 4th. The Eagles did rally with 2 runs in the 6th to briefly tie the Warriors 3-3, but Oakridge quickly responded with a run in the bottom of that inning and padded the lead with 2 more in the top of the 7th to seal the victory.

Todd Edwards started for the Eagles on the hill, recording 3 strikeouts, 4 walks, and 2 hit batters. Edwards gave up only 5 hits and of the 3 runs scored on him, 2 were earned. Adam Rodakowski pitched 3 innings in relief, finishing the game with 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 4 hit batters while allowing 6 hits and 5 unearned runs.

The Eagles will play at Central Linn on Tuesday, May 7, at Yoncalla on Wednesday, May 8, and host Trico League leader, Crow, on Friday, May 10.
