Sight Night
The McKenzie River Lions Club is helping to promote the nationwide "Sight Night" for Halloween. Lions Clubs International is asking people to donate used prescription eyeglasses and regular sunglasses that will eventually be redistributed during optical missions to developing countries. While some clubs organize schoolchildren to request eyeglasses during trick-or-treating, the McKenzie River Club is simply asking that everyone participate during the month of October by dropping off eyewear at the following locations: Lens Crafters, Sears Optical, Pearle Vision, Target Optical, or BJ's Optical Stores. There are also yellow Lions eyeglass donation boxes in the Walterville Post Office and in the Leaburg Library.
Upcoming exhibit
The Springfield Museum will feature an exhibition by noted painter Jerry Ross. The exhibit, "La Spiaggia (the Beach): New Figurative Paintings by Jerry Ross" will open on October 30th. The public is invited to a free opening reception to be held at the Museum, 590 Main Street in downtown Springfield's Cultural District, on Thursday, Nov. 1st, from 5 - 7:30. The exhibition will continue through December 1.
The exhibit will feature a variety of paintings depicting gatherings of people at the beach and in other social settings. The figures bear the hallmarks of Ross's style they are gesturally loose, moodily evocative, celebratory of the human form and steeped in Art History.
The artist and arts advocate (he has won awards during Eugene's annual "Mayor's Art Show" and, conversely, had a hand in founding its alternative, the Salon des Refuses), works in a style that embraces the I Macchiaioli School. This group of Tuscan painters, active during the mid 1800s, strove to break away from the conventions of academic training and put an emphasis on the immediacy and freshness of painting a sort of forerunner of Impressionism. Ross has used a palette with gelato-like hues on some "La Spiaggia" canvases; on others, he's selected more somber and saturated tones. It is in the application of these colors a sort of Abstract Expressionism meets Impressionism that Ross's art gains its full measure: evocative, moody, transportive.
Ross has a long and extensive exhibition history at venues throughout Oregon. He's also been featured in solo shows in Italy on numerous occasions.
The Springfield Museum is open Tues-Friday, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from noon - 4 p.m. There is a $2 admission fee for those 18 and over. For information about other Springfield Museum exhibits, please call (541) 726-2300.
